Virginia Nuclear Plant Reschedules Fall Outage

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas). Dominion Virginia, a subsidiary of Dominion Corporation (NYSE:D) (Richmond, Virginia), brought its Surry 02 offline October 7th, due to damage to the transmission lines. A main steam line ruptured and sent metal debris from the turbine housing structure raining down on the auxiliary systems, steam turbine sections, and transmission lines. Plant operators safely shut the unit down in accordance with NRC protocol.

On Monday, October 9, 2006, officials announced that they would be meeting to discuss the need for expanding their inspection of equipment impacted by the steam line rupture. Due to this concern and the time it would take, it was announced on October 11th that they would start the fall refueling outage scheduled for October 22, 2006, a week early. This will give investigators and maintenance personnel the proper amount of time to assess all damage, and determine if the 30-day outage needs to be extended to incorporate necessary repairs.

A turbine house usually consists of a sheet metal building or structure that is mounted on rails, used mostly for noise reduction, and protection of the turbines and their control systems from the elements. The reason the structure is usually on rails is for accessibility to turbine sections and casings during maintenance actives.

Surry 01 is scheduled to begin its refueling outage in the spring 2007, which will entail the replacement of two low-pressure turbine sections (LP), and maintenance on auxiliary equipment such as hydraulic actuators. Dominion has selected Siemens Westinghouse and the turbine OEM (original equipment manufacturer) to complete the $10 million project.

Dominion Corporation generates and transmits over 28,000 megawatts of electricity to over 50 million homes and businesses in eleven states in the Midwest, Mid-Atlantic and Northeast, through its fleet of coal, natural gas, hydroelectric, nuclear facilities. This makes it one of the largest energy producers in the country.
