Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The world's largest downdraft gasifier has now been commissioned at the new Lebanon Biomass waste-to-energy facility in Tennessee. The project, which is located in Lebanon near Nashville, began commercial operations last month following its completion by PHG Energy LLC (Nashville). For related information, see October 6, 2016, article - PHG Energy and City of Lebanon, Tennessee, Prepare for Waste-to-Energy Project Start-Up.
The Lebanon Biomass facility uses commercial wood waste that was previously dumped into area landfills. The wood is blended with hundreds of tons of scrap tires and sewer sludge to provide fuel for the gasification process. The facility will be capable of converting more than 30 tons of composted material daily into thermal energy while producing a high-carbon biochar that will provide power for the wastewater treatment plant located on-site. The carbon footprint of the facility will be reduced by over 450 tons of CO2 emissions each year, according to Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) calculators.
The footprint of the Lebanon Biomass facility is less than one acre. It is capable of producing up to 400 kilowatts of electricity to serve hundreds customers.
To date, PHG Energy has installed 13 commercial gasifier units, with the Lebanon unit being the largest, and logged tens of thousands of hours in production time. Construction of the Lebanon facility began in November 2015.
The project has a total investment value of $3.5 million. PHG Energy owns and operates the facility.
