Mount Storm Power Station Forced Offline

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas). Dominion Virginia Power’s Mount Storm station was forced offline Friday when an unplanned issue occurred on one of the units. The 522-megawatt Unit 3 had various mechanical issues which prompted engineers to safely remove it from the grid. Some of the issues that were identified included furnace pressure problems and leaks occurring in the FGD vessel and valves. The FGD is the flue gas desulfurization equipment which removes harmful sulfur dioxide emissions. Engineers are performing repairs and hope to have everything resolved this week.

The Mount Storm power station is owned by Dominion Virginia Power and is located in Grant County, West Virginia. The station consists of three coal-fired units with a maximum capacity of 1,632 megawatts. The first unit became operational in 1965 and the turbines for Units 1 and 2 were manufactured by Westinghouse Electric Corporation. The third unit was manufactured by the Asea Brown Boveri Company and began operations in 1973. The station utilizes the latest in sulfur dioxide removal technology with the use of limestone scrubbers to capture approximately 95% of SO2 from the burners.

Dominion Virginia Power (NYSE:D) is one of the nation’s largest investor-owned electric utilities. It delivers power to more than 2 million homes and businesses in Virginia and North Carolina. It is headquartered in Richmond, Virginia. In 2006, the company reported earnings of $1.3 billion on operating revenues of $16.4 billion.
