BASF Awards Engineering, Procurement and Construction Management Contract for New Acrylic Acid Plant in Brazil

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Cordoba, Argentina)--Chemical company BASF (FWB, BAS) (Ludwigschafen, Gemany) will invest in a major petrochemical hub for the production of acrylic acid, butyl acrylate and superabsorbent polymers in Camacari, Northern Brasil.

BASF has awarded CNEC Worley Parsons (ASX:WOR) (Belo Horizonte, Brasil) as the company in charge of the engineering, procurement and construction management contract for the complex. The new site will consist of a 160,000-metric-ton-per-year acrylic acid plant and two polymer units, which will produce butyl acrylate and superabsorbents. Site preparation already has begun, and construction is scheduled to start in September this year. The new site will be operational in the first quarter of 2015.

During its construction process, the project is expected to generate about 1,000 jobs, direct and indirect. Once construction is complete, this complex will be the first of its kind in Latin America and will provide raw material for products such as diapers, chemicals for the construction industry, and acrylic resins for paintings and textile.

BASF is also planning to expand its production in other South American sites. At present, it is planning on investing in the plant it owns in Guaratingueta, Sao Paulo. It also is planning to construct a new production unit of 2-ethyl-hexyl acrylate, a raw material important in the adhesives and special coatings industry. This unit also is expected to be operational in 2015, and it will receive the necessary acrylic acid feed from Camacari site for its production. By the end of 2011, also at the Guaratingueta site, they completed the construction of a new 60,000-metric-ton-per-year sodium methylate production unit.
