Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). Interstate Power and Light (IP&L) (Dubuque, Iowa), a wholly owned subsidiary of Alliant Energy Corporation (NYSE:LNT), is on schedule to begin commercial operation of the 600 megawatt (MW) Emery Generating Station (Plant 1058841)(PEC 29000738) near Clear Lake, Iowa by June 2004. Groundbreaking for the natural gas fired combined cycle plant was held in October of 2002.
The plant is part of IP&L and Alliant's "Power Iowa" program and is the first power plant built in Iowa by the company in 19 Years. "Power Iowa" is a comprehensive portfolio approach towards meeting the states future energy needs. The program includes new fossil fueled generation, renewable energy resources, transmission enhancements and a continued emphasis on energy conservation and efficiency.
According to Lee Hanson, General Manager-Power Iowa Project, Burns & McDonnell (Kansas City, Missouri) provided engineering services for the project and IP&L acted as their own Construction Manager procuring equipment and selecting multiple subcontractors. The new $400 million power plant will utilize (2) General Electric (GE) Frame 7FA combustion turbine/generator sets, (2) Alstom heat recovery steam generators (HRSG) and a GE D-11 steam turbine/generator to produce electricity for the grid. Natural gas will be supplied by a 13-mile pipeline stretching from the Emery Generating Station to the Ventura gas gate located southwest of Ventura, Iowa. In July 2003 it was announced that IP&L and Clear Lake Sanitation District (CLSD) had signed a 25-year contract for CLSD to supply tertiary treated water to the plant. "This contract is the first of its kind between a utility and a wastewater treatment facility in Iowa," states Mr. Hanson. "These types of arrangements are quite common out west and in areas where there are water issues but as far as I know this a first for Iowa" he says. The recycled water will provide up to 40 percent of what is required for cooling water at the new plant with the remaining 60 percent coming from ground water sources.
Alliant Energy Corporation (NYSE: LNT) is an energy holding company with regulated utility providers as well as non-regulated companies involved in delivering energy-related products and services. IP&L is a part of Alliant Energy's utility operations that serve more than 1.4 million customers in Iowa, Illinois, Minnesota and Wisconsin. Their service territory covers 54,000 square miles in the heartland of America and includes 9,700 miles of electric transmission lines and 8,000 miles of natural gas main.
