ABB Lummus Technology for Taiwan’s Petrochem Complex

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas) -- ABB Lummus Global (NYSE:ABB )(Zurich, Switzerland) has been awarded a contract to provide technologies for a greenfield petrochemical complex for Taiwan’s state owned CPC Corp. Technologies to be utilized in the new complex in Lin Yuan, Kaohsiung, include ethylene, OCT (olefins conversion technology), DPG (dripolene pyrolysis gasoline) hydrotreating, and butadiene extraction. The OCT process provides flexibility for product balancing by boosting propylene production via metathesis. This 432,000 tons per annum (tpa) plant, based on liquid cracking, is scheduled to begin commercial production in the second half of 2013.

Lummus’s latest generation SRT V cracking furnaces and recovery technology will be used in the 600,000 (tpa) ethylene plant. Patented binary refrigeration design will be used in the recovery section, combining two systems and saving capital and maintenance costs.

The contract includes a 130,000 tpa butadiene extraction unit that Lummus will supply in partnership with BASF. This process claims markets leadership in terms of being a reliable, environmentally friendly and efficient solvent. More than 70% of Taiwan’s ethylene production is based on Lummus technology and now the OCT process places the company in the country’s propylene production market.

CPC Corp is at the core of Taiwan’s hydrocarbons industry. The company has over 14,700 employees and is looking to become an international conglomerate in the petroleum, petrochemical and high-tech fields as it gears up for the privatization of state owned enterprises.
