Alabama Primed for Major Future Industrial Project Construction

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas). Planned project activity in the state of Alabama is heating up as 288 industrial projects are in the works. These projects total about $15.9 billion and are all scheduled to begin construction between 2006 and 2010. The four largest projects include a nuclear power plant, a grassroot steel mill, a grassroot LNG terminal, and a grassroot aircraft manufacturing plant. Total investment value (TIV) for these four projects alone exceeds $7 billion.

These four projects are a good representation of the industrial activity in the state, as they fall into the four largest industries in terms of future project spending – Power, Metals & Minerals, Industrial Manufacturing, and Terminals. The Power Industry leads the way with 69 projects and a TIV of $6.4 billion. Alabama is becoming a leading state for coal-fired power plant project work.

Second is the Metals & Minerals Industry with 52 projects and a TIV of $4 billion. Steel manufacturers are being lured to the state because of its proximity to a growing number of automotive manufacturers and the oil & gas industry. The Industrial Manufacturing Industry is third with 76 projects and a TIV of $1.7 billion. Fourth is the Terminals Industry with five projects and a TIV of $1.2 billion.

Alabama is one of the largest states on the U.S. Gulf Coast for plant population with about 910 operational plants. In addition, there are about 50 grassroot industrial plants in various stages of development (planned, engineered or under construction).
