Beryl Bears Down on Texas Coast

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Beryl was expected to regain hurricane status before making landfall on the Texas coast early Monday morning, but its forecasted track suggested the storm would miss the largest oil, gas, refining and petrochemical assets along the coast. The most significant threat to industrial assets appeared to be the potential for power disruptions from high winds that are expected to reach hurricane force Category 1 levels.

As of Sunday, Industrial Info had not reported any refining or petrochemical plants offline in Texas or Mexico as a result of Beryl. At Corpus Christi, Texas, the East and West sides of Valero Energy Corporation's (NYSE:VLO) (San Antonio, Texas) 220,000-barrel-per-day Bill Greehey Refining Complex continued operations on Sunday, as did CITGO Petroleum Corporation's (Houston, Texas) 165,000-BBL/d East and West plants. Exxon Mobil Corporation (NYSE:XOM) (Spring, Texas) continued operations at its 557,000-BBL/d Baytown, Texas, refinery.

Coastal regions from Corpus Christi to Galveston were expected to see up to five feet of storm surge. The Port of Corpus Christi and Port O'Connor were at Hurricane Readiness Level 1, with the potential of at least temporary closure before the storm made landfall. The ports for Freeport, Houston, and Galveston were at status Yankee. Three rail companies serving Texas, BNSF (Fort Worth, Texas), Union Pacific (Omaha, Nebraska) and Kansas City Southern (Kansas City, Missouri), were on alert and prepping teams and supplies for rapid response as needed.

Industrial Info continues to monitor plant operations and storm impacts closely, reporting storm impacted events as confirmed.

The National Hurricane Center said a hurricane warning was in effect for the Texas coast from Baffin Bay, Texas, northward to San Luis Pass. A storm surge watch was in effect for north of Baffin Bay to the north entrance of the Padre Island National Seashore. After making landfall, Beryl was forecast to turn northeastward and move farther inland over eastern Texas and Arkansas late Monday and Tuesday.

Last week, Shell plc (NYSE:SHEL) (London, England) announced it was temporarily halting production at some of its offshore operations as a precautionary measure including its Perdido asset, where non-essential personnel were evacuated after completing the safe shut-in of production. Chevron Corporation (NYSE:CVX) (San Ramon, California), BP plc (NYSE:BP) (London) and other producers have reported no impacts to production across the Gulf of Mexico other than the evacuation of non-essential personnel where warranted.
