BlueFire to Start Construction Soon on Waste-to-Ethanol Plant in California

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--BlueFire Ethanol Incorporated (OTC:BFRE) (Irvine, California) could start construction as early as next month on a waste-to-ethanol plant in Lancaster, California, that will convert landfill waste into the renewable fuel and give a peek into the future of ethanol production from nonfood sources.

In April, the company secured Brinderson Engineers & Constructors (Costa Mesa, California) as the turnkey engineering, procurement and construction contractor for the estimated $10 million project. Construction will begin after all of the necessary permits are obtained.

Plans call for a 3.1 million-gallon-per-year cellulosic-based ethanol plant that will use landfill waste from Waste Management's (NYSE:WMI) (Houston, Texas) landfill in Lancaster. The company's technology uses a hydrolysis approach to break down and separate the waste stream into a sugar solution that is then run through a typical ethanol-production process of fermentation, distillation and dehydration.

Construction is expected to take about nine months, and the plant should be operational by March 2009.

Plans are already in the works to build additional waste-to-ethanol plants in Corona and Elverta in California with capacities of 17 million and 55 million gallons per year, respectively, of ethanol. The company's long-term goals after 2009 are to build additional plants -- between five and seven per year -- in the Northeast and Southeast U.S. at landfill locations.

Industrial Info's Ethanol Database provides a comprehensive outline of all current development activities in the emerging alternative fuels market. This database covers 147 ethanol plants in operation and 530 plants under development. It also covers 98 operational biodiesel plants and 245 biodiesel plants under development.
