Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources Incorporated; Houston, Texas). What will be Irelands largest onshore windfarm is now under construction at Meentycat in County Donegal.
Bonus Energy (Brande, Denmark) has won the contract from the developers Airtricity (Dublin, Ireland) to supply 38 wind turbines to the $96 million project. The models supplied will be split into 23 x Bonus 2.3 MW and 15 x Bonus 1.3 MW sets. The difference in size of the turbines has been arranged to comply with planning regulations so that the larger 100-meter high models will not be seen from the main roads nearer to which the smaller models will be sited.
The 72 MW project has received planning commission for high voltage grid line to connect it with the national grid. Power generated will assist in stabilizing the voltage in Donegal. The windfarm is entering into a long-term power purchase agreement with Aitricity's supply business which enabled the company to arrange finance to fund the cost of construction.
Airtricity was established in 1997 to develop wind energy in Ireland and abroad. The company is currently developing windfarms in the Republic of Ireland (ROI), Northern Ireland (NI), England, Scotland and the US. Airtricity is an integrated utility generating and supplying electricity. It supplies green renewable electricity to over 30,000 commercial customers in both ROI and NI and has four operational windfarms in Donegal, Sligo, Cavan and Wicklow.
Eddie O'Connor, ce of Airtrcity, said, "The wind will always blow. In particular over the winter electricity peaks, the very conditions, which lead to high electricity demand, also give rise to high output from the turbines. Airtricity's customers along with the general consumer in Donegal will benefit from the construction of Meentycat."
Bonus energy is currently installing 23 x 2.3 MW turbines at the Causeymire windfarm in Scotland for National Wind Power. It will soon start supplying turbines to two more large wind projects in Scotland - the 50.6 MW Rothes and the 147 MW Black Law wind farms. The latter will be the largest in the UK and is owned by Scottish Power.
Bonus also supplied the 214 x 1.3 MW turbines to the 272.8 MW West Texas King Mountain windfarm through Bonus Wind Inc, Texas. At the time the turbines were supplied this was the largest wind project in the world.
Bonus Energy md Palle Norgaard says," The order backlog of Bonus Energy is record breaking and at present exceeds $ 330 million. Thus both a satisfactory turnover for the present financial year and a good starting point for the next financial year have been ensured."
This comment has more significance than just being good things that an md likes to say. The timing of the statement is particularly good for the prospects of selling the company which is the 5th largest in the world in the wind turbine sector with a market share of 6-7%. Reliable Danish media sources have reported that moves to put the company on the market are 'being considered'.
