Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas) Borealis Polymers N V (Mechelen, Belgium) is currently planning polypropylene capacity expansions at a site in Schwechat, Austria, as well as in Porvoo, Finland. The total investment for the projects is $115 million.
The Schwechat expansion is broken into two parts, with one being a pilot plant and the other increasing production within an existing unit. Both units will be fitted with the Borealis Borstar process technology. The pilot plant will be centered on four gas-phase reactor vessels and cost approximately $40 million to construct. The existing unit expansion will require a $45 million investment. Construction is expected to commence in the spring of 2008, with completion following in the latter part of 2009.
At its Porvoo site, Borealis will increase an existing 155,000 metric ton a year polypropylene unit to a production capacity of 220,000 metric ton a year. This will require an investment of $30 million. The expansion will kick-off in the fall of this year, and completion is scheduled for the end of 2008.
