Calpine Added 6,000 MW Despite Soft Energy Market in 2002

Calpine Corporation (NYSE: CPN) (San Jose, California), one of North America's leading Private Energy Producers (PEP) has added over 6,000 megawatts (MW) of natural gas-fired generation in 2002 at ten locations in North America. Calpine's generation capacity has now grown to over 17,000 MW in North America with an additional 1,200 MW in the United Kingdom.

Calpine is continuing its leadership role in North American power plant development with about 28,000 MW of new generation scheduled to be online by the end of 2004. Calpine has put several projects on hold this year, yet still has over 10,300 MW in construction to be completed in 2003 and 2004. This is substantially less than the 70,000 MW by 2005 that the company had originally projected.
