CGNPC's Fangchenggang Nuclear Power Project to Begin Construction Later this Month

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--China Guangdong Nuclear Power Corporation's (CGNPC) (Shenzhen) Fangchenggang Nuclear Power Phase I Project received final approval from the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) on July 15, 2010. Construction on the project is scheduled to begin toward the end of this month, the CGNPC announced on July 16, 2010.

Fangchenggang Nuclear Power Project is in Hongxing Village, of Fangchenggang City, in the Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region. The project has a total planned capacity of six 1,000-megawatt (MW) nuclear power units. Of which, two 1,080-MW nuclear power units, which are based on China's improved pressurized water reactor, namely CGNPC's CPR1000 technology, are to be built in Phase I, with a total estimated investment of $3.53 billion.

According to the Cooperative Framework Agreement signed between the CGNPC and the government of Guangxi Zhuang, the project is to be jointly invested by the CGNPC and Guangxi Investment Group Company (Nanning, Guangxi), an investment company under the control of Guangxi Zhuang.

In October 2008, the project received preliminary approval from the NDRC to begin pre-stage preparation. Later, general construction management was contracted to China Guangdong Nuclear Engineering Company Limited (Shenzhen), a subsidiary of CGNPC.

Guangxi Fangchenggang Nuclear Power Company Limited (Fangchenggang, Guangxi) has been registered and established as the project company. Various pre-stage preparations for the project are progressing. According to the schedule, the project will have a single unit construction period of 56 months, and the No. 1 and No. 2 units are expected to begin commercial operation in 2015 and 2016, respectively. Upon completion of Phase I, the project could reduce the consumption of about 6 million metric tons of coal, and reduce the emission of about 14.82 million metric tons of carbon dioxide every year, compared with a routine coal-fired power plant.
