China's Power Consumption Up 6.5% in June
China's overall power consumption totaled 524.4 billion kilowatt-hours (kWh) in June, an increase of 6.5% year over year, according to the National Energy Administration (NEA)

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--China's overall power consumption totaled 524.4 billion kilowatt-hours (kWh) in June, an increase of 6.5% year over year, according to the National Energy Administration (NEA). From January through June, accumulative power consumption reached 2.95 trillion kWh, an increase of 6.3% from the first six months of 2016.
The growth came mainly from the secondary (manufacturing) industries. Power consumption by the primary industries (agriculture, forestry, fishing, mining and oil & gas production) reached 12 billion kWh, an increase of 11% from June 2016; the secondary industry reached 382.3 billion kWh, an increase of 5.4%; and the tertiary (services) industry reached 70.2 billion kWh, up 12.7%. Additionally, consumption in urban and township households reached 60 billion kWh, an increase of 7.4%.
From January to June 2017, China's accumulative power consumption in the primary industry reached 50.9 billion kWh, an increase of 7.2% from the same period in 2016; the second industry reached 2.1 trillion kWh, an increase of 6.1%; the third industry reached 405.4 billion kWh, an increase of 9.3%; and urban and township households reached 399 billion kWh, an increase of 4.5%.
For the first six months of the year, China's investment in power source construction reached $15.39 billion, a drop of 13.5% from the same period in 2016:
- The infrastructure investment in hydropower reached $3.15 billion, a drop of 5.5%
- The infrastructure investment in thermal power reached $4.61 billion, a drop of 17.4%
- The infrastructure investment in nuclear power reached $2.7 billion, a drop of 16% year over year
From January through June 2017, the total installed capacity of power plants newly commissioned in China reached 50.56 gigawatts (GW), which was 6.43 GW less than the same period in 2016:
- The installed capacity of hydropower grew by 5.64 GW, which was 1.26 GW more than the same period of last year
- The installed capacity of thermal power grew by 14.21 GW, which was 12.9 GW less than the same period of last year
- Hydropower reached 292.59 GW, an increase of 4.2%
- Thermal power reached 1,064.41 GW, an increase of 4.6%
- Nuclear power reached 34.73 GW, an increase of 17.3%
- Wind power reached 153.55 GW, an increase of 12%
