Construction Nearing Completion for MTBE Unit Conversion Project in Texas

(NYSE:EPD) (Houston, Texas) studied the conversion of its MTBE (methyl tert butyl ether) unit located at its Mont Belvieu, Texas, plant location for several years and plans to complete this goal early next year. Construction started this past summer in August to modify and convert the 16,000 Barrel per day MTBE unit to produce an alternative fuel additive that is more broadly accepted in today's environmentally conscious society.

When this nearly $15 million conversion project is complete in January of 2005, the unit is planning to begin commercial production of iso-octane. Enterprise Products hired S&B Engineers and Constructors (Houston, Texas) to provide the engineering and construction services necessary to complete this major project. Iso-octane is used as a gasoline octane enhancement and is derived from isobutane. Other gasoline oxygenate alternatives will continue to be studied over the next decade in order to focus on implementing additional fuel additives that will potentially replace MTBE.
