Construction on Hohhot Petrochemical's 5 Million-Metric-Ton Refining Expansion Begins

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The construction of Hohhot Petrochemical Company's (Hohhot, Inner Mongolia) 5 million-metric-ton refining expansion project began July 27, 2010, according to an announcement by China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) (Beijing) on August 1.

As a regional subsidiary of CNPC, Hohhot Petrochemical is the only refinery in Inner Mongolia. The company was established in 1990 and merged with CNPC in July 2000. The company currently has a crude oil refining capacity of 1.5 million metric tons per year, including 12 sets of devices such as the atmosphere and vacuum distillation device, and a catalyzed cracking device. The refining expansion project is at the existing plant area of Hohhot Petrochemical in Hohhot City, and is mainly comprised of 10 sets of new refining devices and a 150,000-ton-per-year polypropylene device, with a total investment of about $1.22 billion.

China Petroleum Engineering & Construction Corporation (CPECC) East China Design Branch Company (Qingdao, Shandong) is responsible for the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) of the 100,000-barrel-per-day atmospheric distillation device, and the 600,000-metric-ton continuous reforming devices.

The project received approval from the National Development and Reform Commission to begin pre-stage preparation in April 2009. Following the approval of the Environmental Impact Assessment report in early this year, the project successfully passed a safety examination on July 25, 2010.
