Contractor Selected to Construct Biomass-Fed Power Plant in Florida

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Biomass Gas & Electric LLC (Norcross, Georgia) has awarded White Construction Incorporated (Clinton, Indiana) the contract to construct the proposed 42-megawatt biomass plant in Tallahassee, Florida, near Florida State University.

The plant will utilize agricultural wood-waste chips, delivered to the plant each week. The wood chips will be heated until they are turned into a gas through the SilvaGas process, using technology from the SilvaGas Corporation (Atlanta, Georgia). The gas will then be burned to produce electricity. The process is a low-cost and efficient method to convert biomass waste and renewables into clean energy.

The Tallahassee site will be constructed in a two-on-one combined-cycle configuration with two combustion turbines, two heat-recovery steam generators, and a steam turbine plus associated equipment.

Ford, Bacon & Davis (Greenville, South Carolina) is providing engineering services, and Golder Associates Incorporated (Tampa, Florida) is acting as consultant on the project. Construction is scheduled for late spring or summer of 2009, with anticipated completion at the end of 2010.
