Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Combining for a total of more than 200 industrial projects representing $41.7 billion, North Dakota and South Dakota lead the Midwest market region, which also includes Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri and Nebraska, in industrial project activity.
North Dakota is at the top of Midwest states for active industrial projects, with 125 projects totaling $24 billion. South Dakota is no slouch with 81 projects totaling $17.7 billion.

Oil and gas firms are investing large amounts to develop hydrocarbons from the Bakken shale formation. For additional information, see December 8, 2011, article - Infrastructure Development Continues in Bakken Shale.
North Dakota is now the fourth-largest oil-producing state in the U.S. This is driving the majority of the industrial project activity in the Dakotas. Northwest Refining Incorporated (Trenton, North Dakota) wants to build a $2.5 billion crude oil refinery south of Williston, North Dakota, to process Bakken crude oil. If approved, construction could start in 2013.
The Dakotas have about $25 billion in Power Industry projects. This includes the Hartland windfarm in Burke, Mountrail and Ward counties in North Dakota. Denali Energy (Baxter, Minnesota) is developing the project, which is envisioned to be constructed in two phases and could total 1 gigawatt of power generation when completed.
Outside of energy, there are a good number of Food & Beverage Industry projects in the Dakotas. There are 24 Food & Beverage Industry projects totaling $592 million in North and South Dakota. First American Farms (Sioux Falls, South Dakota) is evaluating plans to build a $200 million kosher beef slaughtering and packing plant in Beresford, South Dakota. The startup processing company says that it wants to build the plant to meet the growing worldwide demand for kosher beef. If approved, construction could begin in late 2012.
Information on these and other projects is available in Industrial Info's North American Industrial Database.
