Ecuador's CELEC HidroPaute Begins Construction on 487-Megawatt Sopladora Hydropower Plant

Researched by Industrial Info Resources Latin America (Cordoba, Argentina)--Ecuador's state-owned CELEC (Quito, Ecuador) recently began construction on the 487-megawatt (MW) Sopladora hydropower plant, which is 150 kilometers north of Paute Azuay, Ecuador.

Construction on the plant is expected to be completed in four years. The bidding process to erect the plant was won by China Gezhouba Group Company Limited (Wuhan, China). The facility will be equipped with three 162.33-MW Francis hydro turbine-generators sets.

At the same time, CELEC's HidroPaute business unit has successfully completed the Mazar project, which has an output capacity of 160 MW. The company is preparing the definitive studies for the Paute Cardenillo cascade power plant project.

The Paute Sopladora project is downstream of the Molino power plant and will capture the 150-cubic-meter flows directly from the two discharge tunnels of Paute Molino, which will go through the underground powerhouse.

The Paute Cardenillo Project will be developed downstream of the Paute Sopladora hydropower plant, with a direct connection between the two plants, so that both stations use the same flow. The estimated installed capacity will be at least 400 MW.
