Enerkem-Greenfield to Receive Funding for Edmonton Waste-to-Biofuels Plant

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Privately held Enerkem Incorporated (Montreal, Quebec) and joint venture partner GreenField Ethanol (Toronto, Ontario) have formed Enerkem GreenField Alberta Biofuels, which will receive $3.35 million in additional advance funding from the Government of Alberta Energy to develop a multi-million waste-to-fuels plant, which will be at Ventures Advanced Energy Research facility in Edmonton, Alberta.

Construction of the pilot plant was completed in March 2010, and later this summer construction is expected to begin on the $80 million commercial scale plant. The plant will receive 100,000 tons of municipal solid waste through a 25-year agreement with the City of Edmonton, gasify the waste and produce 36 million gallons per year (9.5 million gallons) of second-generation fuel ethanol.

The facility will be adjacent to the City of Edmonton Waste Management Center in Edmonton, Alberta, and go into commercial operation by early 2011.

The company has proven the technology at their demonstration plant in Westbury, Quebec, that went into operation back in December 2008. The plant produces 5 million liters per year, or 1.3 million gallons, of ethanol from discarded treated utility poles.

Enerkem is also conducting feasibility studies to construct a 20 million-gallon-per-year waste-to-ethanol plant in Mississippi, which could begin construction early next year.
