Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Enterprise Products Partners LP (NYSE:EPD) (Houston, Texas) announced earlier this week that the company, along with Navigator Holdings Limited (NYSE:NVGS) (London, England), will construct an ethylene export terminal at its Morgan's Point complex in La Porte, Texas, on the Houston Ship Channel, according to a company statement. Industrial Info has been tracking the project since November.
The project will be built in a 50:50 joint venture between Enterprise and Navigator, a liquefied gas shipper that has a fleet of 14 ethylene-capable vessels. Construction is expected to begin early next year and take about a year to complete. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
The ethylene terminal will be connected to Enterprise's grassroot ethylene salt cavern storage facility in Mont Belvieu, Texas, and grassroot ethylene pipeline. The storage facility will have approximately 600 million pounds of capacity and a withdrawal rate of 2,000 barrels per hour, expandable to 4,000 barrels per hour. The pipeline will run 24 miles from Mont Belvieu, through the Morgan's Point facility, to Bayport, Texas, and will be connected to producers and consumers of ethylene along the U.S. Gulf Coast. Both projects are expected to be completed in the first quarter of next year. For more information, see Industrial Info's project reports on the storage facility and pipeline.
The decision to build the terminal comes as a wave of ethylene plants are set to begin production along the Gulf Coast. The build-out comes from an abundance of cheap natural gas and ethane from U.S. shale plays. Companies including Dow Chemical Company (NYSE:DOW) (Midland, Michigan), Chevron Phillips Chemical Company LLC (Houston) and Exxon Mobil Corporation (NYSE:XOM) (Irving, Texas) are all on track to complete major ethylene projects before the end of this year along the Texas Gulf Coast.
Other planned ethylene terminals in the area include Ofdfjell Terminals Houston LP's (Seabrook, Texas) planned facility in Seabrook. The project will be constructed at an existing ethane terminal and will include the addition of a refrigerated storage tank to export ethylene and natural gas liquids to meet market demand abroad. JGC America Incorporated (Houston) is performing engineering work on the project, which is expected to be completed in the second quarter of 2019.
