Processing and distribution firms plan to invest more than $1.25 billion to build facilities, expand plants and upgrade equipment. Industrial Info is tracking more than 100 individual project plans, with the value of each project ranging from $650,000 to $230 million. As the year progresses, more projects will be added, and a small percentage of the projects will be delayed or cancelled.

The majority of project plans call for upgrades, modernizations and expansions to facilities that are operational. Moreover, project plans span the range of the industry's subsectors and include:
  • $35 million flour mill expansion
  • $25 million bakery facility conversion
  • $18 million smoothie production line addition
  • $10 million food additives plant expansion
  • $5 million meat slaughtering plant expansion
  • $5 million cold storage facility expansion
Grassroot construction activity accounts for $692 million in project expenditures and is tied to 12 new plants. In one instance, plans call for building a 320,000-square-foot facility to product salad dressings in Boone County, with an estimated cost of $90 million. Construction is slated to begin this summer, and the facility is scheduled to begin operation in the first quarter of 2018.
