Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--France plans to raise its annual subsidies for renewable energy by about 24% in 2026, lifting the support to roughly €7.7 billion (US$9.07 billion), according to energy regulator Enerdata (Grenoble).

The move follows sharp upward revisions in 2025, when subsidy costs were increased by about 43% to €6.2 billion (US$7.31 billion), reflecting higher-than-expected inflation, increased input costs and more ambitious deployment targets.
France has been scaling up its renewable capacity. In 2024, it added 4.6 GW of solar photovoltaic (PV), bringing total solar capacity to about 22.1 GW. Meanwhile, wind (both onshore and offshore) and hydro continue to contribute significantly; renewables made up 30% of generation capacity, with hydro providing 42% of renewable generation, wind 33% and solar 16%.
The need for higher subsidies also is tied to regulatory and operational challenges. Project permitting delays, land constraints and slower grid connections are hindering faster deployment. And with electricity market prices being relatively low, more subsidies are needed to make new projects viable.
France's Pluriannual Energy Program (PPE) is pushing an ambitious PV-capacity target of 52 GW by 2028, up from 22 GW in 2023.
