Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--GVK Power (Goindwal Sahib) Limited, a fully owned subsidiary of GVK Power & Infrastructure Limited (GVKPIL), has finalized plans for a 1,320-megawatt (MW) expansion to its ongoing 540-MW thermal power project, which brings the total plant capacity to 1,860 MW. The project has been categorized in two phases, of which the grassroot phase of the project will include two coal-based units of 270 MW each, and the expansion phase of the project will include two coal-based units of 660 MW each.
The expansion project will be based on supercritical technology, as it consumes less coal per unit of electricity generated. The project will be at Goindwal Sahib, in the district of Tarn Taran, Punjab.
Earlier, Punjab State Power Corporation Limited awarded this project to GVK on the basis of a competitive bidding mechanism, and on the condition that GVK will act as an independent power producer. The total land acquired in the grassroot phase is about 1,100 acres, and the additional land required for the expansion phase is about 170 acres. The state government has committed to assist GVK regarding the coal linkage for the first two units, which will be obtained from a captive coal mine at Tokisud North Sub block in the state of Jharkhand. GVK is expected to obtain the coal for the expansion phase. The company laid the double railway line of 35 kilometers, from Khadur Sahib to Sri Goindwal Sahib, and built electrostatic precipitators to make it a virtually pollution-free power station. The water requirement for the project will be met from the Beas River.
The $225 million engineering, procurement and construction contract was awarded to Punj Lloyd Limited for Phase I, which has reached the construction stage. Bharat Heavy Electrical Limited was awarded the $256 million contract for Phase I. The company is the main equipment supplier, including the boiler-turbine-generator package. Unit 1 is expected to be commissioned in May 2012, and Unit 2 is expected to be set up in August 2012.
Construction of the expansion project is expected to begin in August 2011, and it will require a $1.47 billion investment. Unit 3 is expected to begin generation in January 2015, and the project is expected to be completed by July 2015, with the commissioning of Unit 4. GVK is looking for the experienced agencies to perform civil, structural and architectural works, as well as the erection of mechanical, electrical and C&I systems as per their design for the expansion phase.
