Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Horsehead Corporation (NASDAQ:ZINC) (Monaca, Pennsylvania) is proceeding on schedule with construction of a new, $450 million zinc processing plant in Forest City, North Carolina. The plant is expected to see production start up in fourth-quarter 2013.
Horsehead is currently hiring workers for the new plant, which will employ about 250.
In 2010, Horsehead began operations at another project, an $80 million zinc dust recycling plant, in Barnwell, South Carolina.
Once the new North Carolina plant is up and running, Horsehead will shut down an existing zinc plant in Monaca, Pennsylvania, which is scheduled for the end of 2013. Shell Chemical recently extended an option and purchase agreement for the Monaca site, where it is considering constructing an ethylene cracker to take advantage of feedstock from the Marcellus Shale.
