Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The Mid-Atlantic is one of the U.S. market regions to see strong growth in Metals & Minerals Industry project activity in recent years, and this trend is intensifying in 2014. According to the February 2014 update of the North American Industrial Project Spending Index, Metals & Minerals firms are planning to begin construction on $3.4 billion worth of projects during 2014. This is up from $1.2 billion during the same period last year, representing the largest percentage increase in the value of project activity of any U.S. region. The Mid-Atlantic includes Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia and West Virginia .
More than $700 million worth of Metals & Minerals projects have been recently completed or are nearing completion in the Mid-Atlantic region, including projects by Nucor Corporation (NYSE:NUE) (Charlotte, North Carolina) and Horsehead Corporation (NASDAQ:ZINC) (Monaca, Pennsylvania). Nucor recently completed a $125 million modernization and expansion at its steel mill in Darlington, South Carolina, and is nearing completion of a $100 million upgrade of the compact strip mill in Berkeley, South Carolina. For details, see related March 25, 2014, article - Nucor Nears Completion of Compact Strip Production Modernization in South Carolina.
Horsehead Corporation is continuing with the commissioning its new, $450 million special high-grade zinc smelter in Moorseboro, North Carolina. The commissioning process was hampered by winter weather, which froze some piping, but zinc production should begin any day now.
Probably, the biggest news for the region this year has been an announcement by Toray Industries Incorporated that it plans to build a $1 billion carbon fiber manufacturing plant in Spartanburg County, South Carolina.
