Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The state-run Indian Oil Corporation Limited (BSE:530965) (IOC) (New Delhi) has announced a four-month delay in the $202 million capacity expansion plans of its refinery in Panipat, Haryana. The new units, which had been scheduled for connection in December 2009, will now be connected in April 2010. The addition of the new units would raise the capacity of the refinery from the existing 12 million tons per year to 15 million tons per year.
IOC Refineries Director B.N. Bankarpur said that connecting the new units would require half of the plant to be shut down. Since the demand for fuel during winter is high, the shutdown has been postponed to April to enable the company to meet the anticipated higher demand during that period.
IOC would need to shut down a crude distillation unit (CDU), a delayed coking unit (DCU), and a hydrocracking unit for 40-45 days. The expansion project includes increasing the capacities of the CDU, the vacuum distillation unit, the DCU, and the once-through hydrocracking unit, as well as the installation of second stage reactors in the diesel hydrotreating unit.
