Indonesia Bans Palm Oil Exports

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Indonesia, the world's largest producer of palm oil, recently announced a ban on palm oil exports, which went into effect April 28. Indonesia aims to ensure the domestic availability of crude palm oil products at affordable prices.

The scarcity of stock among domestic vendors, high palm oil prices and robust demand may have "triggered the government to press the panic button," said Sathia Varqa, owner of Palm Oil Analytics (Singapore).

The world annually consumes about 240 million tons of edible oils, of which almost 80 million tons (or 34%) is palm oil; of this, about 50 million tons come from Indonesia.
