Indonesia's Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources is looking to biomass co-firing as a substitute for coal in the nation's power plants. The ministry aims to reach a maximum of 3% in the national energy mix by 2025.
PT Indonesia Power, a subsidiary of PT PLN (Perseo), is one of the companies that is aggressively encouraging the use of co-firing. The subsidiary has conducted co-firing trials with biomass pellets, carried out at PLTU Taman Jeranjang and PLTU Banten 3 Lontar, and the process will continue at five other facilities: PLTU Suralaya, PLTU Pelabuhan Ratu, PLTU Adipala, PLTU Suralaya 8 and PLTU Banten 2 Labuan. Co-firing is expected to begin at these plants by 2021, if the trial succeeds.
