Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--International Paper Company (NYSE:IP) (IP) (Memphis, Tennessee) is proceeding with plans to perform a cold outage of its pulp and paper mill complex in Savannah, Georgia. IP plans to take the mill down for scheduled maintenance next February, during which time the mills, boilers and power generating units will go cold. The cold period will last a few days, while parts of the mill are scheduled to shut down for as many as 10 days.

During the outage, the company plans to complete the installation of a new economizer on its power boiler, as well as other small projects apart from the routine repair and overall maintenance of major equipment that is performed annually. The mill estimates expenditures directly related to the outage to be between $20 million and $25 million.

Operations at the Savannah mill began in 1936. Today, the mill produces unbleached kraft linerboard, corrugating medium paper and saturated kraft paper at a rate of approximately 1 million tons per year. IP's pulp mill consists of 23 batch digesters and two continuous digesters, a bleach plant and chemical recovery operations, including a black liquor recovery boiler. On the paper mill side, operations include three paper machines and a finishing. The mill's steam and electrical power needs are met by an 880,000-pound-per-hour power boiler, and two steam turbine generators that have a combined capacity of 153 megawatts. The Savannah mill operates the largest boilers and turbines in the IP fleet.
