Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Demand is increasing for e-commerce products, resulting in warehouse growth in the U.S. Industrial Info is tracking a large scale direct distribution project from Lowe's Companies Incorporated (NYSE:LOW) (Mooresville, North Carolina) who is following the e-commerce leader Amazon in this trend.
Lowe's is a home improvement company that developed from a small hardware store and is now progressing from store sales to internet sales, offering direct home shipment or in-store pickup of goods. Due to increased internet sales, the company is offering customers more product lines.
Lowe's is using Vannoy Construction to build a 1 million-square-foot, $100 million direct fulfillment center on 110 acres in Pleasant View, Tennessee. Pleasant View is close to Nashville and was chosen due to its proximity to one of the largest shipping hubs in the U.S. With a completion date of 2018, the center will offer more variety and a higher quality of product due to a large scale centralized storage facility.
Products can be shipped or flown directly from overseas or any other manufacturing center in the U.S. or abroad to the facility, and then from there directly shipped or flown to customers or stores. New digital supply chain management processes greatly increase product ordering speed, and thus availability time can be shortened.
