Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). Manitoba Hydro, a Crown Corporation (Winnipeg, Manitoba), currently has 5,500 megawatts of total operating generating capacity and is looking to add 532 megawatts of new capacity from now through 2013. All of Hydros planned generation growth will come in the form of renewable energy.
There are two hydroelectric generating stations that are being upgraded, which will account for 127 megawatts of the additional generation. Hydro is also in the permitting process for a new grassroot 255 MW hydroelectric generating station. The other 150 megawatts of generation is scheduled to be wind and it may self-build or select private energy producers to supply this portion.
Kelsey Generating Station (Kelsey, Manitoba) is conducting engineering to replace seven General Electric (GE) vertical fixed blade turbine runners with Alstom Canada (Tracy, Quebec) units. These upgrades, which include Alstom rewinding the generators, will increase Kelseys Generating Station capacity by 38% from 224 MW to 309 MW in 2011.
Hydros Pointe Du Bois Generating Station (Point Du Bois, Manitoba), in conjunction with General Electric Canada (GEC) (Lachine, Quebec), is replacing a total of sixteen horizontal Francis turbine runners, as well as rewinding generators. This will increase the stations capacity 53.8% from 78 MW to 120 MW in 2013.
The new Wuskwatim Generating Station (Nelson House, Manitoba) partly owned by Nisichawayasihk Cree Nation (Nelson House, Manitoba) is in the regulatory process. Acres International (Winnipeg, Manitoba), a division of Hatch Acres (Oakville, Ontario), is the project engineer. The station is being designed to have three vertical Kaplan turbines each with an 85 MW generator 2012 increasing system generating capacity by 4.7%.
The last 2.77% of the capacity increase (150 MW) is wind generation. In addition to Hydro several independent power producers are evaluating the projects including Windcor Power Systems (Calgary, Alberta), Vector Wind Energy, Incorporated (Ottawa, Ontario), Schneider Power, Incorporated (Toronto, Ontario), Westman Wind Power Company (Winnipeg, Manitoba), and Bison Wind, Incorporated, a joint venture of EHN Canada (Rochester, New York) and Sequoia Energy, Incorporated (Winnipeg, Manitoba).
