Mega Tomato Greenhouse and Packing Facility Planned for Southern California

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Privately held Windset Farms (Delta, British Columbia) recently received approval for a conditional use permit from local authorities and is proceeding with plans to build a $75 million hydroponic and produce packing facility in Santa Maria, California. Tomatoes will be grown primarily, with plans to expand into other vegetables. The Santa Maria site will be the company's first greenhouse and packing facility in the United States. Plans call for four 28-foot-tall greenhouses totaling 5.6 million square feet and a 35-foot-tall, nearly 200,000-square-foot produce processing and packing facility, as well as other support buildings. Each greenhouse will occupy approximately 32 acres.

Site preparation for the 222-acre site is set to begin at the end of this month. Erection of the greenhouses will start this fall, and the facility is scheduled to begin planting next summer.

Netherlands-based Kubo (Monster) will fabricate and erect the greenhouse facilities. Windset will oversee site construction and build-out of the remaining facilities, with the use of local and regional contractors.

Hydroponics is the method of growing plants without soil, using mineral nutrient solutions, and involves significantly less water than traditional farming for the same amount of crops. Windset says its methods can grow 10 to 20 times as much food as traditional farming methods in the same area.
