Mission Foods Starts Construction on Tortilla Plant in California

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--After several months of design engineering, Mission Foods Corporation (Irving, Texas), a business unit of Gruma Corporation (Monterrey, Mexico), recently began building a tortilla-manufacturing plant in Panorama City, California. Gruma, the world’s largest tortilla manufacturer, is investing more than $50 million to build a 200,000-square-foot plant on the site of the former General Motors assembly plant. Scheduled to begin operation in the summer of 2008, the facility is projected to produce more than 300 million pounds per year of tortilla and chips.

Facility Builders & Erectors (Anaheim, California) is providing construction services for the building and site infrastructure. Gruma designs and manufactures proprietary tortilla equipment and will procure auxiliary equipment and systems.

The company currently operates six manufacturing plants throughout the United States, including one in Rancho Cucamonga.

Gruma’s growth in the U.S. market is being fueled by the increasing growth of the Hispanic population and the increasing consumption of Mexican-style food by non-Hispanics in the U.S. Gruma estimates that the size of the U.S. tortilla market at the manufacturing level is around $2 billion.
