New York Looking Ever Upwards with over 10,400 Megawatts of New Generation to Meet Future Power Requirements

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas). The State of New York currently has over 40,800 megawatts of operational generation to supply the local power grid. Project development plans indicate over 10,400 megawatts are being considered to meet new growth requirements and replace older inefficient units ready for retirement. In addition to new generation, some companies are performing studies to see what environmental modifications will be needed to keep some of the older units running.

Renewable Energy accounts for about 51% of the new generation planned, or 5,309 megawatts. The primary source for the renewable energy projects (95.7%) is wind power with over 5,085 megawatts at forty plus locations. One company, Noble Environmental Power, LLC out of Chester Connecticut, with offices in Bad Axe, Michigan; Arcade and Churubusco, New York, is proposing seven wind farms with a combined capacity of 600 megawatts in New York. The rest of the proposed renewable energy projects have biomass, wood, landfill gas or hydro as fuel sources.

Fossil fuel-related generation accounts for about 49% of the new generation, or 5,138 megawatts. The primary technology being proposed is combined-cycle. There is even a possible integrated gasification project that produces the gas for the combined-cycle process at NRG Energy, Incorporated’s (NYSE:NRG) (Princeton, New Jersey) Oak Harbor Power Station in Oswego, New York.
