Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). Genencor International (Nasdaq:GCOR) (Palo Alto, California) has delighted the city of Rochester, New York by naming it as the location for their new clinical-scale manufacturing plant. Consisting of two 20,000 square foot buildings, the plant will produce therapeutic proteins to support pipeline drugs in pre-clinical and clinical trials from the company's human health care products division.
The $10 million first phase of the project is scheduled to begin operation in 2004. If the company's initial clinical trials prove successful, work will proceed on Phase 2, with completion expected in 2005. The project's construction and equipment cost is anticipated to be $50 million.
Genencor already has a pilot-scale manufacturing plant located in Rochester, as well as their global manufacturing support group and global bio-products business headquarters. A variety of factors impacted Genencor's decision to place the new plant in Rochester including the benefits offered by the existing company infrastructure at the site. The State of New York offered a strong enticement by designating the location as an economic development zone, offering significant tax benefits, employee training grants, and other incentives. Currently employing approximately 200 people in Rochester, the expanded operations are expected to add another 100 jobs at the site.
