Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Perth, Australia)--Newen Australia Pty Limited (Melbourne, Australia), a subsidiary of a German family-owned business NewEn GMBH (Bremen, Germany), is experiencing significant delays in developing the proposed Salt Creek windfarm in Victoria, Australia.

The windfarm, which is to be located 15 kilometres (km) south of Woorndoo in Victoria, will generate 12 megawatts (MW) of electricity and will have up to 12 turbines. The project was proposed and received planning permits in 2007; since then, the project undergone several design revisions, and the company has been negotiating with Powercor to access a transmission line. There were several complications involved with the grid and transmission permits, which caused undue delays.

Newen is seeking permits to connect the windfarm to the local grid, as well as seeking local council approvals for the project. Subject to the approvals, NewEn expects to commence construction on the windfarm by 2015.

NewEn Australia is also working on building another windfarm at the Dundonnell site, which is only 15 kilometers from Woorndoo, where the Salt Creek windfarm will be built. The Dundonnell windfarm will produce approximately 200 MW of electricity.

In 2012, NewEn signed an agreement with TrustPower Limited (Tauranga, New Zealand) to co-develop the Dundonnell project. The project will involve construction of a 33-kilometer transmission line to connect the windfarm to the 500-kilovolt terminal at or near the Mortlake Power Station.

NewEn is currently preparing an environmental effects statement (EES) for the Dundonell windfarm, and expects to receive planning permits by the second quarter of 2014. Based on the approvals and capital grants, construction start date will be at least two years away from now.

Newen Australia's proposed 200-MW Wingeel windfarm in Victoria is in its very early stages and is undergoing feasibility studies. The windfarm will feature approximately 80 wind turbines with a nominal capacity of 2.5 to 3 MW each. It will generate enough electricity to power more than 140,000 homes.
