North Carolina Plans Hefty Base Load Generation Increase

There is currently more than 4,000 megawatts of operational nuclear generation and 13,000 megawatts of operational coal-fired generation capacity in the state of North Carolina. Utilities are studying adding around 7,500 megawatts of new base load type generation to meet future electricity demand growth projections. Base load generation makes up the majority of the more than 10,000 megawatts of planned new generation projects, totaling 33 units in the state of North Carolina.

The utilities currently operate five nuclear units for 4,080 megawatts of operational generation. Proposed projects would more than double nuclear capacity in the state. These companies have proposed the addition of four nuclear units at existing stations, totaling 4,400 megawatts, as well as an additional two units for 2,200 megawatts at a grassroot site for a 162% increase to 10,680 megawatts. The new units, including the grassroot facility, have been studied off and on since the 1970’s.

The two 800-megawatt coal-fired units under development are at an existing 780-megawatt station and will triple the station’s existing capacity and increase the states coal generation capacity from 13,126 megawatts by 12% to 14,726 megawatts.
