The primary fuel for new base-load generation development in North Carolina is nuclear with five units totaling over 5,500 megawatts being proposed by Progress Energy, Incorporated (NYSE:PGN)(Raleigh, North Carolina) and Duke Power Company, a subsidiary of Duke Energy Corporation (NYSE:DUK) (Charlotte, North Carolina). Coal is second with two 800-megawatt (MW) units for a total of 1,600 megawatts of base-load generation capacity. The coal projects are both at the existing Duke Power Company’s Cliffside Power Station in Rutherford County, North Carolina.

Plans to meet North Carolina’s intermediate and peak load requirements will be accomplished primarily by adding natural gas and oil-fired units. Currently, there are fifteen such units with 1,140 megawatts capacity that are proposed. There is an additional 100 megawatts being proposed that would utilize low emission or clean energy technology. These projects include two hydroelectric units, two biomass-fired units & two landfill gas power plants.
