Nucor Nears Completion of Compact Strip Production Modernization in South Carolina

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Nucor Corporation (NYSE:NUE) (Charlotte, North Carolina) is nearing completion of a $100 million modernization of its compact strip production (CSP) mill at the company's Berkeley Steel Mill in Huger, South Carolina. The project consists of modifications to the caster and rolling mill, including the addition of a seventh hot mill stand.

The modernization will allow Nucor to produce a wider-gauge (1.88-meter width) and lighter-gauge hot-rolled strip for high-strength and ultra-high-strength applications in the agricultural, pipe and tube, industrial equipment, heavy truck and automotive industries.

The project was carried out by equipment vendor SMS Siemag (Dusseldorf, Germany).

The modernized plant should be operational in one to two weeks, plant officials told Industrial Info.
