Ontario's Niagara Region Windfarm Turns On its Turbines

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The Niagara Region Windfarm, which is located in the Townships of West Lincoln and Wainfleet Ontario, began commercial operations earlier this month, following its completion by Enercon Canada Incorporated (Toronto, Ontario) and Boralex Incorporated (Montreal, Quebec).

The $800 million, 230-megawatt (MW) windfarm utilizes 77 Enercon wind turbines and sells its energy under a 20-year power purchase agreement with the Ontario Power Authority. The energy generated will be enough to power more than 80,000 homes each year. The project created approximately 700 jobs over the course of construction and is expected to see 100 long-term jobs during its operating life.

Construction of the windfarm was completed by Borea Construction and took just over a year. Enercon has 75% ownership of the windfarm, while Boralex has a 25% stake. Boralex will be responsible for the operations and maintenance for the next 15 years under a long-term service agreement with Enercon.
