Paseo-Cargill's Kansas City Biodiesel Plant Up and Running; Cargill to Complete Soybean Crusher Expansion in July

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Paseo-Cargill Energy LLC's (Kansas City, Missouri) biodiesel plant is up and running and producing accredited BQ9000 biodiesel at next to Cargill's soybean oil mill near the Paseo bridge crossing the Missouri river. Paseo-Cargill Energy is a joint venture between privately held ag giant Cargill Incorporated (Wayzata, Minnesota), Paseo Biofuels LLC (Jefferson City, Missouri) and the Missouri Soybean Association (Kansas City).

The plant has been producing biodiesel since April and is now running at full capacity. The plant has the capability of producing 40 million gallons per year of biodiesel from soybean oil crushed and processed at Cargill's facility.

Lurgi Incorporated (Memphis, Tennessee) provided the licensed process technology and Cargill managed the project itself, selecting subcontractors and supervising construction activity. Construction started in November 2006 and took about 15 months to complete. Cost estimates to build the plant were in the $40 million range.

To support the new venture, Cargill Oil Seeds division undertook a $120 million expansion project on the Kansas City mill to increase crushing capacity from 90,000 bushels per day to 160,000 bushels to provide the estimated 60 million-70 million gallons of oil needed to run the biodiesel plant annually. Construction on the crusher is expected to wrap up in July of this year.

Missouri now has three operating biodiesel plants capable of producing more than 73 million gallons per year of the renewable fuel. Mid America Biofuels operates a plant in Mexico and Global Fuels has a small plant running in Dexter.
