Petrobras' Urucu-Manaus Gas Pipeline to Become Fully Operational in 2009

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Petrobras' Transportadora Urucu-Manaus gas pipeline, which has been under construction since the second quarter of 2007, will start operating in September 2009. The pipeline will have a transportation capacity of 10 million standard cubic meters per day and will connect the oil and gas fields of Urucu and Manaus City, located in Amazonas state.

The pipeline is divided into three stretches: A, B1 and B2. The already existing 18-inch-diameter A leg of the pipeline is 173 miles long and connects Urucu to Coari city. At present, this section is used for transporting Liquefied Petroleum Gas; however, it will be adapted to transport natural gas. At the same time, a new 10-inch-diameter pipeline is being constructed to transport LPG. The consortium formed by OAS (Sao Paulo, Brazil) and Etesco Construcoes Comercio (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) was awarded the contract to carry out construction of this stretch of the pipeline.

The 122-mile B1 leg of the pipeline, which will have 20-inch-diameter pipe, will join the cities of Coari and Anama. The contract for the construction of this stretch was granted to the consortium formed by the Brazilian companies Carioca Engenharia (Rio de Janeiro) and Andrade Gutierrez S.A. (Belo Horizonte) and is expected to be complete by the end of 2008. The 116-mile-long B2 section of the undertaking will connect Anama and Manaus cities, thus completing the route of the pipeline. This section was put in the hands of Skanska AB (STO:SKAB) (Solna, Sweden) and Camargo Correa (Sao Paulo, Brazil).

Skanska owns 50% of the overall shares, which amounts to $103 million, and will be constructing the 186-kilometer B2 segment of the Anama and Manaus section, stretching from the Manacapuru Lake to the Reman refinery near the Negro River using 20-inch diameter gas pipe.
