Petroperu to Expand Talara Refinery

Researched by Industrial Info Resources Latin American (Cordoba, Argentina)--Petroperu (Lima, Peru), is proceeding with a modernization project at its 65,000-barrel-per-day (BBL/d) Talara Refinery, which is in the Piura department, north of Lima.

The Talara Refinery Modernization Project (PMRT) aims to increase the refinery's processing capacity, reduce the sulfur content in fuels, and allow the refinery to process heavier crudes. To achieve these objectives, the company decided to upgrade and expand existing units, as well as construct new facilities.

There are two revamp projects under way. The existing primary crude distillation unit, which is currently processing 65,000 BBL/d, will have a capacity of 95,000 BBL/d after an expansion is completed. Separately, the 19,000-BBL/d fluid catalytic cracking unit (FCCU), which uses UOP technology, is also under being expanded to increase its processing capacity to 25,000 BBL/d.

New units added to the refinery include a catalytic reformer; flexicoker; naphtha hydrotreater; sulfuric acid unit; a gasoline hydrotreater; and several associated units. The construction is expected to be finished by the end of 2015.

Petroperu selected the Spanish engineering and construction firm Tecnicas Reunidas SA (MCE:TRE) (Madrid, Spain) to develop the PMRT. Other companies performed basic engineering, including Axens (Rueil-Malmaison, France) for the catalytic reformer; Haldor Topsoe A/S (Lyngby, Denmark) for the hydrotreater; Exxon Mobil Corporation (NYSE:XOM) (Irving, Texas) for the flexicoker; and UOP for catalytic cracking.

The Talara Refinery is one of four facilities that Petroperu owns and operate in Peru.
