Pipeline Erupts in Flames East of Houston, Texas

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--A segment of pipeline owned by Energy Transfer LP (NYSE:ET) (Dallas, Texas) burst into flame in La Porte, Texas, which is east of Houston, on Monday morning. Road closures and shelter-in-place advisories followed, with evacuations to homes and businesses within a half mile from the fire site, according to the Houston Chronicle.

One firefighter has been treated by EMS for minor injuries from the pipeline fire, according to the Austin American-Statesman. No other injuries have been reported.

The pipeline has a capacity of 260,000 barrels per day (BBL/d). It carries raw natural gas liquids (NGLs) from Energy Transfer assets in Jackson County, Texas, to Mont Belvieu, Texas, for fractionation.

Authorities issued an evacuation order for residents and community members, particularly those in the community of Deer Park, which borders La Porte to the west. Deer Park Assistant Police Chief Frank Hart said about 50 homes were impacted by the evacuation order. Fifteen senior residents at a nearby assisted living facility also were evacuated, according to Harris County authorities.

Deer Park Mayor Jerry Mouton said during the press conference that a few houses had caught on fire, although the full extent of the damage is not yet known. Mouton said several businesses and schools, including the central campus of San Jacinto College, also had been evacuated.

The La Porte Fire Department responded to a fire at 9:55 a.m. in the 8700 block of Spencer Highway, La Porte spokesperson Lee Woodward said in a press release. Deer Park's Office of Emergency Management officials said a mobile command post was set up at East Boulevard and Spencer Highway, and the Harris County Pollution Control Services and Department is at the scene, according to the Houston Chronicle.

Spreading flames near Spencer Highway have made additional smaller grass fires, according to the Austin American-Statesman.
