Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--India is set to welcome private firms into its nuclear energy sector, seeking investments totaling US$26 billion to bolster non-carbon-emitting power sources. The Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (Mumbai) has engaged in multiple rounds of talks with private firms including Reliance Industries Limited (Mumbai) and Tata Power (Mumbai) to invest about 440 billion rupees (US$5.30 billion) each. This initiative aims to propel India toward its ambitious goal of having 50% of its electric generation capacity sourced from non-fossil fuels by 2030.
Under the funding plan, private companies will be responsible for investing in nuclear plants, acquiring land and water, and overseeing construction outside the reactor complex. The new investment plan signals a positive shift not only in meeting targets, but also in fostering a public-private partnership to drive India's clean energy agenda forward. In India, private companies are currently barred from setting up nuclear power plants but are allowed to supply components, equipment and sign construction contracts for work outside of the reactors.
