Progress Energy Completes $675 Million Expansion Florida Plant

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Progress Energy Florida Incorporated (St. Petersburg, Florida), a subsidiary of Progress Energy Incorporated (NYSE:PGN) (Raleigh, North Carolina), has completed construction and start-up testing of the $675 million, 1,370-megawatt (MW) repowering and expansion project at the Paul L. Bartow Power Station in St. Petersburg.

Construction began in early 2007 and was completed in the spring of this year. Progress Energy anticipates full commercial start-up of the project by the end of June. The project consisted of constructing a new efficient and environmentally friendly combined-cycle power island at the existing facility. The project will be used to replace three existing boilers and steam turbine generators. The expansion repowering comes just in time to help meet peak summer demands for Progress Energy customers.

The power island features four 190-MW dual-fueled Siemens Westinghouse Power Corporation (SWPC) SGT6-5000FD3 combustion turbine (CT) generators that will utilize evaporative cooling to increase the turbines output capacity. Each turbine will be attached to a duct-fired Vogt Power International triple pressure heat recovery steam generator, with one 420-MW Mitsubishi Power Systems steam turbine generator operating from the steam generated by the CTs. A fifth combustion turbine was also installed as part of the project and will operate in a simple-cycle peaking configuration to help with generating additional power during peak demand. Both dry low-NOx combustors and selective catalytic reduction were utilized as state-of-the-art emissions technology for the project.

Bibb & Associates (Lenexa, Kansas), a subsidiary of Kiewit Corporation (Omaha, Nebraska), provided both the design and engineering services for the project, while The Industrial Company (TIC) (Steamboat Springs, Colorado) acted as the general contractor.
