Qatar's Urea, Ammonia Expansion Powered by GE

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar land, Texas)--When the Qatar Fertilizer Company's Qafco 5 expansion project is complete at the end of 2009 or early in 2010, it will boost the company's position as the world's largest single-site urea producer and will mark a milestone in Qatar's planned progress to becoming the world's leading gas-fed petrochemical producers. A pipeline from Ras Laffan to the Mesaieed Industrial area will supply gas for the $700 million project, which will include ammonia and urea plants.

The expansion will increase the company's production capacity to 4 million tons per annum (TPA) of urea production up from the current 2.8 million TPA, and ammonia production capacity will increase from the current 4 million TPA to 3.1 million TPA.

Qafco has signed a letter of intent with GE Oil & Gas for the project's gas turbine and compressor technology. The letter of intent covers the supply of four Frame 6B gas turbine generators, five compressors, five steam turbines, heat-recovery steam generators (HRSGs) and related services. These will be used in a cogeneration power plant in the project for the expansion of urea and ammonia production and the overall project site.

The turbines are scheduled for delivery to the site in Qatar in the first half of 2009, and the compressors and steam turbines will be shipped in the second half of the same year. The gas turbines will be equipped with dry low NOx technology that will limit the emissions to 15 parts per million and will be customized to meet Qafco's specifications and the petrochemical industry's requirements. The gas turbines and the compressors for Qafco 5 will be manufactured at GE Oil & Gas unit in Florence, Italy, and the steam turbines will be manufactured at the company's unit in Le Creusot, France.

GE Oil &Gas is building a facility at Ras Laffan to enable the company to offer ongoing support to Qafco and other companies. It will act as a service technology hub for Qatar and the Middle East region.
