EIA: U.S. Power Use to Reach Record Highs in 2025, 2026 - U.S. power consumption will hit record highs in 2025 and 2026, the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) said in its Short-Term Energy Outlook this week. The EIA projected power demand will rise to 4,186 billion kilowatt-hours (kWh) in 2025 and 4,284 billion kWh in 2026, up from a record 4,097 billion kWh in 2024. (Reuters)

Trump Names FERC Chair - U.S. President Donald Trump named David Rosner as chairman of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), where he has served since mid-2024 as a commissioner, the agency said on Wednesday. The appointment of Rosner, a Democrat, is expected to be temporary. Trump in June nominated to the commission two of his fellow Republicans who await Senate confirmation. FERC, which has a maximum of five members, currently has three members, after Mark Christie, a Republican, left last week. (Reuters)

South Africa Rescinds TotalEnergies, Shell Offshore Exploration Permit - A South African court has rescinded an environmental authorization granted to TotalEnergies SE (Courbevoie, France) and its joint venture partner Shell plc (London, England) to explore for oil in a block off the Cape coast, a court judgment seen by Reuters showed. However, the court said TotalEnergies should be given a chance to rectify deficiencies identified, including a failure to properly assess the potential socio-economic impacts of any oil spills, or take climate change into consideration.
