Summary
Brazil is rapidly expanding its renewable energy sector, adding 7.4 GW to its electric system in 2025, with 76% coming from renewables. This growth strengthens Brazil's ability to attract energy-intensive industries, and Industrial Info Resources is tracking more than 1,800 renewable power and energy storage projects valued at US5$12 billion across the country.Brazil's Renewables Growth
In 2025, Brazil's electricity generation capacity expanded by 7.4 gigawatts (GW) across the Brazilian Electric System (SEB), excluding distributed power capacity--also known as micro- and mini-distributed generation (MMGD). Of the capacity added that year, 76% was renewable energy, reinforcing Brazil's position as a clean energy hub.According to Industrial Info Resources data, there are more than 1,804 renewable power and energy storage projects across Brazil, valued at US$512 billion.
By year-end, Brazil's total power generation capacity reached 259.5 GW, with renewables at 87.2%. MMGD represented over 43 GW, accounting for 16.8% of the total.
Of the 7.4 GW capacity added in 2025, excluding MMGD, solar energy made up 2.81 GW, wind 1.88 GW, thermal 2.5 GW, and hydropower 206 MW.
By the end of 2025, hydropower capacity accounted for 42.5% of the total installed capacity, thermal was at 19.7% (natural gas has the largest share), wind represented another 13.3%, and solar 7.7%.
Brazil's high renewable capacity positions it as a prime destination for energy-intensive industries. Supportive domestic policies foster further clean energy growth and reduce carbon-related costs for investors.
This is one of the reasons why there is an increased interest for data center developers to establish themselves in Brazil. Their power intensive assets' demand can be met by the growing green capacity developed in the country.
At the same time, a renewable-dominated power matrix reduces Brazil's electricity costs exposure to oil and gas price shocks and boosts resilience. However, recent energy ministry planning documents show that Brazil's power system is facing greater operational complexity from changes in the generation mix, shifting load patterns, hydrological risks, and the growing need to manage distributed-generation surpluses in distribution networks.
Looking ahead, domestic generation capacity is expected to grow to meet increasing power demand. The National Electricity Operator (ONS) forecasts the system to grow to 270.1 GW by 2030.
Brazil's Power Generation Projects
According to Industrial Info Resources data, there are more than 1,800 renewable power and energy storage projects across Brazil, valued at US$512 billion, although around 80% of them have a low probability of execution.A breakdown of the projects shows that 932 of them account for solar power plants, utility and distributed, amounting to investments of US$158.4 billion. Meanwhile, wind projects amount to almost 300 projects worth investments of US$326.5 billion. However, more than 264 wind projects have a low probability of completion.
Power Transmission & Distribution
By year-end, Brazil's transmission network was extended to 191,352 kilometers. Meanwhile, 500/525-kilovolt (kV) lines made up 40.9%, 230-kV lines 36.8%, and 600-kV lines 6.7% of the total. The transmission network has grown from 171,000 kilometers in 2022, with a target 200,000 kilometers under the Novo Pac, a program aimed at attracting investments and developing infrastructure across Brazil. Within this scheme, about 30 billion reais (US$5.89 billion) were expected to be invested between 2023 and 2026, with another 65 billion reais (US$12.76 billion) forecasted for projects after 2026.
Industrial Info Resources has mapped 341 transmission and distribution projects across Brazil, amounting to investments of US$11.5 billion.
Among these, the largest transmission projects in terms of investment value include the 600-kV Angicos to Itaporanga, 500-kV Ourolandia II to Jussiape, and the 800-kV Graca Aranha to Silvania lines.
Finally, examining electricity demand, Brazil's consumption remained flat in 2025 at 562,243 gigawatt-hours, with the residential and industrial classes recording growth of 1.5% and 0.3%, respectively, compared to 2024.
Key Takeaways
- Brazil integrated 7.4 GW of power generation in 2025, with renewables accounting for 76%.
